Website Guidelines
·
You must have a photo release form filled out for any recognizable
persons in photos placed on the site.
·
Do not give troop numbers and individuals' names in the same place.
·
NEVER
use last names of girls.
·
You're allowed to put email addresses on your site, but make sure
you have the adult's permission to do so. No personal
girl information at
any time, including phone numbers, email addresses, addresses,
etc.
·
Do not use names with photos, and make sure you delete any names
that may appear on shirts, nametags, etc. in the photo.
·
Usually, you should save graphics and clip art as .gif files
and photographs as .jpg files.
·
Avoid using trademarks, banner, icons, graphics, or logos from other
sites. Any advertisements that appear on web pages should have a
disclaimer below it that states "Neither GSUSA nor its council is
responsible for the content of any other site linked to this site.
The inclusion of any link to such a site does not create or imply
any approval or endorsement of that site by GSUSA or its council.
GSUSA and its councils make no representations whatsoever as to any
other website that you may access through this one." You can
make this text very small.
·
If you have links to other areas that you do not maintain
personally, you should monitor these links closely for inappropriate
messages, advertisements, etc. Do not include links blindly on your
site without thoroughly browsing the site first.
·
You should have a copyright notice on the bottom of each page that
reads "Copyright 2001. Girl Scouts of the USA. All rights
reserved."
·
Please keep graphics at a reasonable size. When you load a lot of
graphic images it takes a long time for the page to
download--visitors get frustrated if pages take too long!
·
You should NEVER alter the Girl Scout logo in any way other than
changing the size. If the tagline "Where Girls Grow Strong"
is used, it should be attached to the original logo. You cannot type
it separately. If you need this image, please let me know (webmaster),
and I'll be glad to email it to you.
·
Be very careful when listing event details. You should not put
directions or specific times to any function held “off post” on ANY
page. You don't want strangers to know where there is going to be
groups of girls together. (FORCE PROTECTION ISSUE)
·
Please make sure you and an adult proofread your website text.
·
Always include an email contact to whoever manages the site.
Visitors like to be able to report problems directly to the
webmaster.
·
Remember
that underlining is only used for hyperlinks. Use bold, italics,
large fonts or all caps for emphasis.
·
Never use a messaging system that allows anyone to post
information--this includes chat rooms. Guestbooks may ONLY be used
if the postings are not automatic and you are able to screen them
first.
·
NEVER leave any dead-end pages. Every page should have a "Back"
link so visitors are able to get back where they started.
·
Always remember the golden rule for graphics and other designs,
"if it's not yours, don't use it," even if it is easily
downloadable. Copyright code of conduct is the same with websites
as it is for publications. If you want to copy something that you
didn't create, you must first get written permission from the
owner. Not sure what to do now? Check out some of the easy
and fun graphic programs and create your own designs. Not a
techno-wiz gal? Why not draw your own pictures, and then scan
them? What a great way to let the girls in your troop contribute to
the site.
·
Also make sure to get permission to use music or sound on your site
(or the printed words to songs). ALWAYS have permission!
·
Keep
information current. Visitors will want to keep re-visiting your
site to get the latest "scoop" about your troop!
· Contact
the
webmaster with your new web address to receive permission to
link to our site. |
